2,6-Di-tert-butylphenol (DTBP) is an organic compound, belongs to the class of phenolic compounds and is characterized by the presence of two tert butyl groups attached to the phenolic ring. It is prepared by reacting phenol with isobutylene with an acidic catalyst.

The reaction of 2-tert-butyl phenol with isobutene in the liquid phase is performed with small quantities of catalyst to produce 2,6-DTBP. This reaction is performed in the presence of diluents such as liquid saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbons at temperatures of 0° C. to 80° C.

APPLICATIONS of DTBP (Di-tert-butylphenol)

2 6 di tert butylphenols are majorly used as an antioxidant for hydrocarbon-based products like Industrial, Engine Oil, Driveline and Fuel applications.

Antioxidant for Lubricants and Fuels:

• Fuels: 2,6-DTBP is used in heating systems, heating fuels, fireplaces, furnaces, radiators, etc.
• Lubricants: It is also used as a lubricant for engines brake fluids, oils, etc (does not include personal care lubricants).

Manufacture of Phenolic Antioxidants for Plastics:

• Used to produce antioxidants that stabilize plastics, preventing thermal and oxidative damage and improving the durability and performance of polymer products.

UV Stabilizers:

• Protects materials from UV radiation, extending the lifespan and maintaining the integrity of outdoor products like coatings, films, and plastics.

Antioxidant for Lubricants and Fuels:

Agricultural:

• It is used in growing certain crops and in raising and farming animals e.g., animal husbandry, farming of animals/animal production, raising of animals for food or fur, animal feed, products for household pets.

Automotive care:

• It is used in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, products for cleaning and caring for automobiles (auto shampoo, polish/wax, undercarriage treatment, brake grease).

Fragrance:

• Fragrances or odour agents use 2,6-DTBP. It can also be used in home products (cleaners, laundry products, air fresheners) or similar industrial products.

Personal care products:

• 2,6 DTBP finds its application in cosmetics, shampoos, perfumes, soaps, lotions, toothpaste, etc.

Pure product is normally solid at room temperature. But a 50% solution of this product in Kerosene is also promoted by a major.

Packing

2,6-DTBP can be supplied in ISO Tankers or 150 330 lbs. galvanized drums.
